Run by the mantra, “The more you tip, the more we bare”, this, er, insiders look at Johnson’s (located in Wilton Manors, Florida), attempts to shine a naked light on the profession of male strippers (a.k.a. exotic dancers). It’s ironic that the frequent comparisons to the artists at Swinging Richards (Atlanta) display the entire male physique in video clips, while its southern counterpart keeps the comely men in their briefs and jockstraps (save and except for a few locker room strip downs), thus belying the film’s title (All Male, All Nude—better as All Male Sometimes Nude—might that be Fake Nudes?).
The management (headed by longtime stripper/entrepreneur/bodybuilder Matt Colunga), attempts to provide an environment for its boys that is both safe and lucrative. Hearing the 50/50 statistic of gay/straight dancers rang a little false on these ears, having ventured (just for research, of course!) into Toronto’s stripper bars where the overwhelming majority of “dancers” were straight guys, trying to pick the pockets of gay men (many closeted) in the VIP rooms.
The business model most certainly favours Colunga where his “boys” have to pay a nightly “house fee” (varying in rate depending when their shift starts) for the privilege of stripping down to their underwear (skimpy as that might be) then hoping that the patrons will stuff dollar bills into their thongs, or go to the backrooms for something more financially/sexually substantive.
The frequent interviews with the “boys” paint a rosy, caring picture of the owner and his sexy men (failing a breathalyser before or after shift can mean unemployment; failure to call in an absence results in a loss of the next lucrative Friday night assignment).
While the dancers state on several occasions that their services are only “fantasies”, this can and does go wrong on occasion for patrons who assume that they are loved by these buff hunks who are happy to flash a bit of cock and ass if the price is right.
Little wonder false names are given to those who imagine they are as attractive to the nubile men as their imaginations will permit them. JWR
