Capricho Arabe (Serenata) – Francisco Tárrega
A most inviting introduction featuring an effective slide, leads to an equally engaging song without words that is bound to satisfy any discerning ear. Nicely balanced voicing.
Panaderos – Esteban de Sanlúcar
Olé! Very busy lines if—at times—a tad untidy. Just needs an ounce more relaxo and centre.
Asturias (Leyenda) – Isaac Albéniz
The opening’s forward moving “accompaniment” is always forcefully punctuated. The rhapsodic declamations are most welcome. A covey of ideally executed octaves and harmonics. Contrasts ‘R’ Us!
Adelita (Mazurka) - Tárrega
A thoughtfully introspective essay on the human experience, delicately presented by Aaron Larget-Caplan.
Canarios from Suite Española – Gaspar Sanz
Rollicking bit of fun with nary a dull moment. Just enjoy and go with the flow, trying not to get a wee bit tipsy!
Spanish Romance – Anonymous
Opening filled with drama before calming down into a melody that is bound to bring back memories or kindle new ones. Then a tastefully executed modulation and a heartfelt, fond adieu.
El Abejorro – Emilio Pujol
Definitely going with the irrepressible flow. Larget-Caplan tosses off the technical challenges as if they’re child’s play. Be ye not deceived: they’re not!
Sonatina – F.M. Torroba
The Allegretto is très amiable, clearly delineated from pillar to post with some intriguing surprises along the path. A thoughtful sorbet between the other more agitated/forceful pronouncements of the outer movements perfectly sums up this Andante—savour it all! The closing Allegro—a bit of “catch me if you can”—is not so much driven from speed, but more by variety of ideas, texture and tone. It’s a fine way of closing out this delectable Spanish set, with nary a castanet in sight! JWR
